My 2016 Music Resolution

Happy New Year ! It's a new opportunity for achieving the the goals you set for last year but for some reason or another you just didn't get around to it . So just press the reset button and get it done this year for real . I'm speaking from my own experience with making new years resolutions . Mainly I'm speaking about the music related goals that I would yearly set for my self . I would  say to my self ," I will get better at sight reading this year "or I would plan to learn more songs on the piano but year after year I would set goals that were designed to make me a better musician , but before I knew it life would happen and the next thing I knew the year would be over . Well let me encourage you . Don't give up the fight . If at first you don't succeed , try and try again . It worked for me . I can remember when i couldn't read one measure of music but I didn't give up . And now after a few years of failed resolutions I can now read and play any music book I so desire  and do it well . So maybe you have said over and over  to your self I will learn to play the piano but you never seen to find the time . Or you've been playing the same old stuff and your ready for a new bag of tricks on the keys well this can be your year to make new musical goals for your self . It may have been years since you touched your piano are keyboard . well there is no time like the present . Start fresh this new year and reach new heights with your music this year . I dare you to ! good luck and Happy New Year !

You Have To Want It !

The title of this post says it all , " You Have To Want It ". And even though this is very powerful statement and it probably is is the only idea that a person needs to mentally conceptualize in order  to have the inner foundation and strength to start out and accomplish any thing that this particular individual conceives in the mind to accomplish . And the difficulty of the task has little or nothing
to do with it . I said all that to say this . I don't know how many times I have had someone come up
to me and say ," you really play the piano well , I wish is could play the piano " . And always respond
by telling them that they can learn to play if they really want to . The key is if they really want to .
How many times have we admired someone doing something and made the statement , " I would love to learn to do that " , but soon after the thought just fades away . Well , let me be straight forward
with you about learning to play the piano . If you don't really really really want to play you won't . And in contrast if you really really really want to learn to play nothing and no body will be able to stop you . I remember one day when I was about 8 years old after watching the organist play at church I made up my mind that I wanted to play piano . So I went to my mother and told her of my new desire . Well she just smiled and bluntly let me know she couldn't afford any piano lessons .Well someone else would have been defeated at this time but not I . I was even more determine and vowed that I would let nothing stop me . Well to make a long story short I've been now playing the piano , , organ and anything with black and white keys for about 38 years and this is how i make a living .Listen to me , it don't matter if you are ; tall , short , chubby , skinny , long fingers or short length fingers or can read music or not . It doesn't even matter if you have a piano teacher or not . especially now that we have the internet . The only thing you need is a burning desire to play the instrument . And let me tell you from my own personal experience , where there is a will  you will find a way ! Be encouraged if you really or one that does have this burning deep inside to play the keys . You will realize your dream if you can believe and have the faith to see it through  . Well let me help you if I can . I just happen to have a YouTube channel where I teach piano for free ! I teach with easy no nonsense approach to playing the piano .  Good luck on your journey  . BELIEVE ! and take a leap of faith .

Where Do I Start ?

Where do I start on my journey to learn to play the piano . I this is a question I asked time and time again . I also asked many different piano players who were very skilled players but to no avail . They either gave me a bunch of unusable information like they really didn't intend help me in the first place , or they would really wholeheartedly attempt to tell me what I needed to know to get as good as they were . But I eventually realized that most of the people who make the journey and some how become great piano or keyboard players are not able to convey even basically the path they took to get there . Well , how is one two know what steps to take from beginner piano to being a virtuoso pianist ( someone who can blaze on the keys ) ?
Well i'm glad you asked . There is really only one way that I know of . Some one has to take the journey , and then successfully make the journey then they must document or map out the course so that others that
come after can enjoy similar or greater success . Well your in luck ! I know a guy who in fact has taken the journey successfully and knows the way . His " YouTube " channel is ............. www.youtube.com/user/SMHMusicChannel
As a matter of fact I know this man quite well . Drum roll , He is the author of this blog , yours truly
Steve Lamount Harrold . Pianist , Organist  , Trumpeter and Vocalist and  Piano teacher among other things
that I happen to do well . I post free piano lessons monthly on my channel . So if your serious about making this journey go to my channel and subscribe . Lol that was a short commercial break . Any way back to ,     " where do i start " ? Now let me say first of all , this is the path that I took . There or probably are many other ways to get there but I can only tell you what worked for me . Now that I have pre-qualified what i'm about to say now here it goes .
1. learn all the notes on the piano or keyboard by memory ( Don't ever use stickers it will only handicap you and slow you down ) .
2 . learn by sight recognition the interval of a half step and the interval of a whole step on the piano
3 . Then learn to play basic chords built the from the major scale
4 . Then learn all your major chords then all your minor chords
5 . next learn the chord system in the key of C
now if I have got your attention and your serious and you want the rest of the journey , i need you to do 2 things : Go to my channel and subscribe then leave me this comment " whats the rest of the journey "? I will share this with only people who really want the info . And if you go through the trouble of the last 2 steps then I know I'm not wasting my time .
Oh ' heres a hint , I have free lessons posted on my YouTube Channel for steps 1 - 5    at ...........

One thing at a time !

It amazes me how many people start out playing the piano only to get frustrated and overwhelmed by all the details and then they quit . I can't pretend that I know the feeling. For me it was my unquenchable desire to play the piano that kept me going until I could see some real progress. And part of the reason that some people give up is because they don't understand how to approach learning to play the piano. Well let me give you my no nonsense approach to learning to play the piano. It's simple. Learn one thing at a time. Don't try to learn everything at one time. That will cause you to burn out. And so when you're sitting at the piano concentrate on learning 1 major thing why you're sitting at the piano. Own that new chord or scale for a minute. Work this new concept that you've learned for a little while before moving on. Then after you learn the new skills backwards and forwards then move on to something new. Never just keep playing until your fatigued , rest then come back to it . By the way heres a great website to buy how to play piano books and DVDs to help you on your quest to play the piano .

What you wanna know it's in the book

I think about all the times watched the other musicians play and i was baffled by the skill that they displayed when they played. How vividly I can remember thinking , I wish I could play like that. So I begin to hang around with piano players thinking that if I hung around I  would pick up some piano chords or some juicy licks. But usually all I got was more frustrated by sitting there watching  them show off on the keyboard.
But then I discovered books. Music books. I found out that everything  they were playing and everything that I would ever wanna play was in a book. That's when my music journey really began. It was basic books at first. But after while I begin to really cook. Learning to play piano was just like with anything else you start off slow and then you pick up the pace. So the moral of the story is realizing that everything you could ever wanna learn is in a book , a music book. Here's a new music site you can go to to find some nice music books, videos , and d_v_d's  or something something you can use to get going on your journey to learn music.

Remember anything you wanna know about music it's in the book.

Why You Want To Play Tells You How To Learn

Why do you want to learn to play the piano ? This is very important .

The reason you want to play the piano tells you the approach or method
you should take when you begin learning to play . Starting out I loved
music but that's not why I started playing the piano . I started playing the
piano because my father was the pastor of a church which didn't have
a pianist . And one day he caught me plucking out a tune on the piano
after church , and said ," son that sounds great be ready to play it at
church next Sunday " . OK !  I was kind of forced into playing out of
a need . So I had to wise up quick . There was no time for formal study .
I had to learn what I could how ever I could and be ready for the gig
each week . I don't know what your situation is but knowing why you
want to play will help you as you choose your approach to learning .
If your reason for wanting to play is because you desire the play any
and all styles of music from the past present and future then let me
suggest traditional or formal  piano study .With formal training comes all
of the skills and exercises you will need so you will be able to handle
the demands that most piano styles can throw at you . Also it will help
you get good at sight reading which is an asset to any pianist .Then
if you just want to play for fun and relaxation and you don't really
want to do any thing but pluck around at the keyboard then let me
suggest to you a good book or video that teaches you to play chords.
Then once you get good at playing chords then get a book or video
on harmony and chord progressions for the piano . Finally If you find
that you are some where in the middle , then let me suggest to you
to take a little of the formal or traditional piano study and get you a
book or video on building chords on the piano and a book or video
about keyboard harmony and chord progressions for the piano .
Well good luck on your journey  . You can get some online help
