Why do you want to learn to play the piano ? This is very important .
The reason you want to play the piano tells you the approach or method
you should take when you begin learning to play . Starting out I loved
music but that's not why I started playing the piano . I started playing the
piano because my father was the pastor of a church which didn't have
a pianist . And one day he caught me plucking out a tune on the piano
after church , and said ," son that sounds great be ready to play it at
church next Sunday " . OK ! I was kind of forced into playing out of
a need . So I had to wise up quick . There was no time for formal study .
I had to learn what I could how ever I could and be ready for the gig
each week . I don't know what your situation is but knowing why you
want to play will help you as you choose your approach to learning .
If your reason for wanting to play is because you desire the play any
and all styles of music from the past present and future then let me
suggest traditional or formal piano study .With formal training comes all
of the skills and exercises you will need so you will be able to handle
the demands that most piano styles can throw at you . Also it will help
you get good at sight reading which is an asset to any pianist .Then
if you just want to play for fun and relaxation and you don't really
want to do any thing but pluck around at the keyboard then let me
suggest to you a good book or video that teaches you to play chords.
Then once you get good at playing chords then get a book or video
on harmony and chord progressions for the piano . Finally If you find
that you are some where in the middle , then let me suggest to you
to take a little of the formal or traditional piano study and get you a
book or video on building chords on the piano and a book or video
about keyboard harmony and chord progressions for the piano .
Well good luck on your journey . You can get some online help
